From the 01.01 till the 31.12.2010 2195 vessels had passed along the Saimaa Canal (Russian part of the canal), including: - 180 passenger vessels, - 1344 dry cargo vessels, - 671 vessels of small size fleet.

The share of vessels under the Russian flag composed 40%, Under the flag of Finland - 10%, Other - 50%.

Within entire period 1658 thousand tons of cargo was transported along the Saimaa Canal (53% increasing). The transportation of wood cargo increased in 2,5 times, the volumes of paper cargoes had a little decreased.

During the navigation of 2010 23110 passengers had traveled along the Saimaa Canal on board of the passenger vessels. Last vessel of this navigation had pas on January 4.

The authorities of Saimaa canal are planning to begin the next navigation on the first days of April.

The new navigation 2007 on Saimaa canal had been opened almost a month earlier than usual. On the late evening of 28th of March m/v EGON W had came up the Saimaa Canal . Favorable weather conditions and good will of the participants of the process had provided the chance to outstrip the usual timetable.

The 2006 navigation on Saimaa Canal was closed on the 28th of January 2007 .

  • 1897 cargo vessels had carried 2115 thousand tons.
  • 50% of all the cargo vessels passed under SAIMA-BALT agency.
  • 163 voyages of passenger vessels had carried 14350 passengers. 298 small craft had carried 1644 persons.

Since the 9th of January 2008 the new system of tariffs for Russian sea ports is issued.

Now it is based on the Gross Tonnage (GT) of the vessel and all the rates are in Rubles.

For the port Vyborg & Vysotsk there is a new item - Navigation dues.

Since the 24th of March 2008 by the Order of Harbour master of port St.Petersburg ice restrictions for the vessels without ice class on the fairways of Vyborg & Vysotsk are removed.

Turnover of goods - 1 763 391 tons, an increase in comparison with 2010 on 6,23 %.

The maximal turnover of goods was fixed in 2004 and had made 2 368 334 tons.

Structure of the turnover of goods:

  • 42 % - wood, makes 736 421 tons (from them turnover from the Russian Federation 388 533 tons)
  • The maximal deliver of wood from the Russian Federation to Finland were in 2006 - 801 683 tons, thus in that 2006 the total deliver of wood to Finland was 841 691 tons.
  • 27 % - mineral cargoes
  • 17 % - forest products, basically paper (149 137 tons) and cellulose (116 981 tons)
  • 5 % - coal, coke
  • 9 % - other cargoes.

  • Lappeenranta - 429 883 tons
  • Joensuu - 222 996 tons
  • Siilinjarvi - 216 050 tons
  • Joutseno - 190 540 tons

  • Others - 67 609 tons

Turnover of goods through Saimaa Canal between Finland and:

  1. The Russian Federation - 388 533 tons (only wood)
  2. Estonia - 309 017 tons
  3. The Netherlands - 295 300 tons
  4. Sweden - 148 733 tons
  5. Poland - 97 698 tons
  6. Germany - 90 288 tons
  7. Latvia - 79 545 tons
  8. Belgium - 61 558 tons
  9. Denmark - 61 474 tons
  10. The Great Britain - 45 641 tons
  11. Lithuania - 29 285 tons
  12. France - 20 090 tons

In whole in the navigation of 2011 on the Saimaa Canal 1352 cargo vessel had passed. From them:

  • The Russian Federation flag - 563 voyages - carried 410 974 tons of cargoes (23,3 %)
  • The greatest quantity was in 2005 - 1 304 voyages - 956 485 tons of cargoes (43 %)
  • The Netherlands flag - 274 voyages - 571 564 tons of cargoes (32,4 %)
  • Antigua flag - 232 voyages - 407 444 tons of cargoes (23,1 %)
  • Finland flag - 171 voyages - 257 554 tons of cargoes (14,6 %)

Duration of navigation in 2011 was 288 days (opening on the 15th of April, closing on the 29th of January)

The shortest period of navigation was in 1969 - 214 days (opening on the 10th of May, closing on the 10th of December)

The longest period of navigation was in 2007-313 days (opening on the 28th of March, closing on the 3rd of February)

The earliest opening of navigation was in 2021 on the 22nd of March.
